Manitou Cliff Dwellings 7.3.17

On our way to Estes Park from Pueblo, we stopped to tour the Manitou Cliff Dwellings near Colorado Springs.

Lots of interesting history here, and if you're in the area, I suggest a visit. It's all self-guided, you can explore as you please, and a couple of hours is enough time to budget for your visit. We got there a little early and had to wait for the gate to open, but it was an opportunity for a good photo op!

Once inside, we found parking the campers quite easy, as there weren't many cars there yet.

Plus, it was another great photo op!

We split up, and everyone chose to go their own way through the dwellings, but we kept meeting up with each other.

Kathy walking through a doorway and down a step to the room I was in. We noted that the Anasazi people of about 1000 years ago were much shorter than we are.

Andy standing in one of the rooms that would have been a house for multiple people. Space needs in housing have certainly changed as well.

It was fun to walk through, as you didn't know what you'd find in the next room, but it was always interesting.

I think this sign that says, "kiva," was explaining the firepit area below.

This was the view from inside the dwellings looking out. Beautiful, isn't it?

We finished our tour with a run through the gift shop and museum, (which they blended together artfully) then a few more pics and we were off to Estes!

If I sent out holiday cards, this would have been one of the pictures I included. Such an amazing view!

A little tourist-y backdrop, but the sky and mountains are my favorite!

There we are, on the road! So, a little explanation here is in order. Jeff and Kathy were pulling our T@b with their Jeep, and we were pulling the Scamp with the Escape. The reason why is T@b weighs more, and Jeep had a higher and safer towing capacity for pulling up the mountains!

Anyway, in a few hours' time, we will be arriving at East Portal Campground in Estes Park. Check out my next post(s) to see what kind of awesome scenery and thrilling things we did during our stay!

Happy camping!

  1. This is very interesting but I think some of these rooms look bigger than your cute camper. Lol! And I am short so I would have probably fit in just fine there.

    1. Oh, how funny! I never even thought about comparing to camper size. Yes, these were at least taller than the camper...maybe about the same floor space. You are like Kathy...you can fit anywhere!
