This is Part 1 of our trip to Estes Park, CO. We traveled with Jeff and Kathy again, and we wanted to include several experiences along the way, so we made an extra-long trip that started at a campground in Kansas that wasn't terribly exciting, but was just the right spot to stop over for a night.
Day 1: Leave from Nevada, IA where we met up with Jeff and Kathy.
We were excited about the trip to say the least. We were going to new states, gonna see some new sites, and go back to Estes Park, a personal favorite.
The drive this first day was uneventful. Flat. Dull. LONG. But we did pass this gem of a town!
I know. We're mature. About a million hours later, we exited the highway to stop for the night.
Welcome to High Plains Campground in Oakley, KS. Located right off the Interstate, it was immensely convenient, reasonably priced, had showers, and an onsite restaurant that was really good!
As you can see, the campsite isn't exactly "beautiful," but we did have a small tree. 😊 And we knew it wasn't going to be scenic or anything, so it was no big deal. As I mentioned, they did have a fabulous restaurant, just steps from our campsites!
Kathy may have ordered a giant margarita with her meal... The service and food were wonderful, and the place was pretty full. Kathy, with some diet restrictions, asked the waitress lots of questions about how the food was prepared. She answered them well, then had the owner/cook come out and speak with her about it. He really wanted to make sure she got something she would enjoy, and took the time to make sure he could make it the way she needed it. I give them 5⭐!
Staying overnight in Kansas meant we got to add a new sticker to our state map. I did the honors:
10th state so far! Woohoo!!
The next morning we left as early as humanly possible to head to Pueblo, CO for some sight seeing and an overnight stop. I'll fill you in with my next post.
Happy camping!
