Pine Point County Park WI 6.15.17

While it had been weeks since we camped, it may have been a good thing. During this trip, Andy and Kathy planned a two day hike on the Ice Age Trail near Chippewa Falls, WI. They needed that time to check, double check, prepare, pack, re-pack, plan, converse...well, you get the idea. Anyway, HELLO, WISCONSIN!!

By now, you probably know I love, love, love visiting Wisconsin! It's a beautiful state with wonderfully friendly people, and they have cheese. Lots and lots of yummy cheese!

This was an extra-long weekend trip that began on a Thursday, and we were lucky to have found such a beautiful campground to call home. Welcome to Pine Point Campground in Chippewa County.

The campground is on Lake Holcombe, and several sites even have docks to access the water.

Look at those fancy new awnings! If you want to see the post about how Michelle and I made them, click here.

While Jeff and Kathy's campsite was adjacent to ours, you can see the trees made each site quite private. Their campsite had a large area around the firepit, so we set up home base at their site.

The B@r T@b all set up with the awning over the kitchen area, and our flamingo flock greeting visitors.

About every other campsite had its own trash can which was incredibly handy! I approve!

View of Lake Holcombe from the campsite across the way from ours. Nobody ever showed up to camp this site, even though it said it was reserved. Silly campers. You missed out!

Sunset!

Our campsite at dusk. We purchased solar rope lights that fit in the rail along the side of the T@b. Makes for nice ambient lighting!

See? It just slips right in.

Friday morning, I drove Kathy and Andy to the trailhead to embark on their two day hike. They both filled their packs with necessities.

Kathy trying to get her cute green backpack to have proper weight distribution.

There were signs and a map posted at the trail head to let hikers know the route and any info that would help them along the way.

For the most part, they just ask that you leave it like you found it. Carry out all trash, don't leave fires burning, etc. Things you would think would be common sense, but we all know how that works!

Ready or not! Here they are!

I think Kathy just experienced an OMG moment. TWO DAYS!!

At the trail head. The hike's official start!

There they go! Andy is leading so he can take care of any spider homes growing across the path before Kathy comes along. That's a good hiking buddy!

Bye guys! See you tomorrow!

As I drove back to the campground, I made a couple of stops in small towns to ask about a place to purchase cheese and stuff, and surprisingly, there wasn't much close by! Wisconsin, you disappointed me!

Anyway, headed back to camp where I found Jeff. We hung out by the fire for a while, got a call from the hikers when they reached their first check-in point. They were doing all right, but they said the trail was a bit of a sloppy mess. It had rained a lot there, and they were spending quite a bit of time going around yucky spots, then reconnecting with the trail. They were still in good spirits and said they'd check in about lunchtime.

Around noon, they called again and were a little less enthusiastic, but were fine. Apparently, there were many, many ticks in the tall grasses they were walking through. They both had several on their pants, and were annoyed and concerned. They said they'd call at the next check-in point, but were kinda thinking about cutting it short and just doing one day. I told them we would meet them wherever they needed us to, so we made plans to meet in two hours, and they'd send us the GPS coordinates.

Jeff decided it was nap time and retired to the Scamp while I went to the T@b to clean up our morning mess. I had just finished when I got a call. They had arrived somewhat early to the check-in spot. As in, an hour early. Jeff and I were at least a 45 minute drive, so I said they were going to have to stay put til we got there, and they said that was fine.

Woke Jeffo up, cleaned out the Jeep, and we punched in the GPS coordinates and were off to find them! We knew they'd be bummed about not getting to do the overnight, but we knew they made the right decision.

Our drive was fun, and we even got to see some wildlife! (Sorry about the language at the beginning...)

We laughed and wondered what kind of wildlife the hikers got to see that day.

We arrived at the GPS coordinates and found these two:

Exhausted, muddy, covered in ticks, and...wait. What are they drinking? Why do they look so happy?

HA! They had each packed a flask in their packs, and decided since they had to wait for us, they may as well have a picnic with beverages.

Our reaction.

So, we load their exhausted, muddy, tick-covered, sloshy butts into the Jeep and back to camp. Fun, huh?

We had a pretty easy night. They definitely needed showers and tick removal, so Jeff and I left them to it and ran to a nearby Walmart for supplies. We each purchased a 6 gallon water jug to keep in our campers, and they've been quite handy!

On the way home, we saw a bear on the side of the road! For the first time in our lives, Jeff and I were struck speechless! When we regained the ability to talk, we called our sleepy hikers to tell them about the bear and the deer, and asked what wildlife they saw on the hike. Their answer? Ticks.

Saturday was a lot of fun. We stayed in the campground all day, went for some walks, sat by the fire, cooked, and enjoyed each other's company.

Smoky fire plus tree-filtered sunlight makes for an excellent photo op!

As seen on my walk with Kathy... Shel Silverstein warned us about this!

Crane by the lake, barely annoyed we were there.

Took flight while we were there. His wingspan was huge!

Kathy capturing scenery with her fancy camera.

This fun little tent was purchased by my dad at a garage sale for $5. It's an outdoor shower tent, and he thought maybe we could use it with our camper. When I mentioned to him that Jeff and Kathy's camper didn't have a shower, he said to give it to them, so we did! It was a complete set, surprisingly, but had a broken pole. We were able to set it up though, and it worked really well. Jeff later purchased a replacement pole for about $3, so for $8, they had an outdoor shower! Not bad.

We went to dinner at a restaurant across the lake, and had a delightful meal with a gorgeous view.

Behind Andy you can see a giant Jenga set! This place was fun!

We went back to camp and spent the evening laughing and playing word games around the fire. We were up late, but nobody complained about the noise, so... we kept on!

Sunday morning marked Jeff and Kathy's departure, so we made a side trip to Chippewa Falls and the Leinenkugel's brewery. If you remember, right about a year ago, this was the B@r T@b's first stop! This time, Scamp got to visit!

We somehow majorly lucked out with parking!

The Leine Lodge was decked out for the brewery's 150th anniversary, and they had this awesome giant adirondack chair that made for great pics.

After the Scampers departed, Andy and I went back and hung out at our own campsite the rest of the day. We had a few visitors come ask to see the T@b and chat about it, and then we had some wildlife visitors, too!

It took us a long time to figure out what was hiding in this tree, but it turned out to be a nest of flying squirrels! OMG, they were adorable!

My view from our campfire.

Andy on the shore of Lake Holcombe during our walk.

Monday morning we packed up and headed home, stopping at cheese stores to stock up!

This is what grumpy campers look like as they have to finish their camping fun and go back to real life.

We did see a Scamp on our way home though!

It's like Jeff and Kathy's twin!

Happy camping!

Finley's Landing Park Sherrill IA 5.26.17

Once again, Kathy knew what she was doing when she booked our campsites at Finley's Landing in eastern Iowa. She and Jeff had been there one time before, and thought we'd like it as well. She was right!

We had two adjacent spots that were perfect for setting up our Tiny Trailerville again! Their Scamp is hiding behind the dome, and the T@b is turned sideways for more privacy. We got in on Friday and got everything set up, then Kathy and I went for a walk to see the Mighty Mississippi!

Isn't this a nice spot? The beach was lovely except for the JERKS WHO PARTIED AND LEFT THEIR TRASH THERE!

It was really a calm, serene view, and we visited a few times over the weekend.

Andy and I had been wanting to share a few of our favorite Wisconsin spots with Jeff and Kathy, knowing they'd really enjoy them, so Saturday, we took a day trip to Monroe and visited Minhas Distillery, Brewery, AND Winery (AKA, the Trifecta) and Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern.

If you've never been to Minhas, we highly suggest it. This is a pic from inside the distillery where we purchased 4 "tastings" each, and the kind bartenders mixed up tasty drinks with the spirits they make. After two tastings each, we took a break to go eat lunch.

Mud Puppy PORTER! (Like their doggo...)

You may be thinking, "Wow. They went to a deli/bar. Whoopee." You would be correct, but you would be understating the amazingness of Baumgartner's. Service is always fantastic, the beer menu features lots and lots of big names as well as a bountiful amount of Wisconsin's best brews, like Minhas and New Glarus. The food, oh the food! The menu is simple, pick a bread, pick a cheese, maybe a meat, tell 'em if you want it hot or cold, and bam! Sandwich heaven. On the table are multiple varieties of delicious mustard. (I said delicious, and considering I really don't even like mustard, this says so much!) They even had gluten-free options for Kathy, which we rank as awesome!

So, we ate giant bricks of cheese served between squishy slices of rye, pumpernickel, and gluten-free, then went back to Minhas to finish our sampling!

This group selfie is one of my favorites! Me, taking the pic (of course), Andy giving Jeff bunny ears, Jeff turned backwards, and Kathy standing on tippy toes to make herself seen. It's absolutely perfect in every way!

After finishing at the distillery, we hit both the brewery and winery, and discovered that by "doing the Minhas Trifecta," we qualified for a cheap t shirt! We all bought one cuz goals. 😊

While we were on this great road trip, it rained back at the campground. This was concerning because eastern Iowa had already had a lot of rain, and the river was fairly high. When we got back, we saw that the campsites across from ours had flooded, and campers had to be moved and squoze into our existing spots. We happily helped accommodate and offered our firepit and the area around it to fellow campers to use as we were grouping around Jeff and Kathy's.

We were lucky enough to have one more day at our campsites, so we spent Sunday doing things we normally do! Take a look!

Enjoying campfires.

Andy trying a Klingon brew I picked up at a local liquor store. (Because we aren't yet big enough nerds!) It was really good, btw!

I think Andy and Jeff are holding hands? Well...I don't like to question it. They look happy!

Kathy and I splurged on an "expensive" bottle of wine to enjoy. It was also quite good, so we just went ahead and finished that...

Finished up the day with a nice fire!

Before leaving on Monday, Kathy and I went for one last walk, and decided not to go on this trail as we would need a kayak or a canoe! The river was SO HIGH, the entire trail was under water!

That wraps up yet another T@b adventure for us. Due to commitments at home, it was going to be WEEKS before we got to camp again! I don't know how we made it through, but we managed.

Happy camping!

T@b Window Awnings

Before we get to the magic, I have a couple of disclaimers.

1. This pattern is from a super generous, creative woman named Sharon Sigmon who shared it with a Facebook T@b group. The instructions will be posted at the end of my post. If you use them, send a shout out to Sharon!

2. I. Don't. Sew. All success of the sewing part of this project goes to my friend Michelle who has mad skills!

It all began when I really started researching T@b campers in 2016 and discovered lots of them had these adorable awnings that somehow made the campers even cuter. Then we went and bought a camper, and I couldn't stand not having one as cute as possible, so I wanted those awnings! I started working on Michelle by showing her pictures and talking up the need for these cute window coverings, and she FINALLY suggested she could help make them. It's almost like I should have just asked her, but this way it was her idea, and I could jump into the project guilt free.

I read and printed the instructions, read them again, gleamed about a 30% understanding, and brought them to Michelle. I ordered outdoor fabric in two patterns to make the awnings reversible. In my mind, this made them versatile and unique.

In reality, I chose two patterns that had to be carefully cut to remain straight, and were stark enough in contrast that we could see through one fabric to the pattern on the next fabric.

Sigh. This led to me searching out a liner fabric, one that could get wet if left on in the rain, but not as expensive as the patterned outdoor fabric because budget.

After a trip to JoAnn Fabrics and a customer service experience of hell, I got the fabric and brought it back to Michelle. Then the plotting and planning began...

This is where I discovered that Michelle is a "wing it" kind of gal when it comes to sewing. Don't get me wrong, I was super appreciative of this as it took the stress off of me for being kinda clueless as to what we needed to do. She sort of shrugged and figured it would all work out in the end.

We used her craft room floor as our fabric table. This worked great!

You can see we had plenty of room to spread out the fabric, measure, and make cuts. But then...

She said, "You need to do the cutting since I'm doing the sewing." What? this was NOT in the plan! One thing she knew about me and shrugged off as insignificant was the fact that I have never cut a straight line ever. EVER. Even with a straight edged cutter. I embrace this flaw, but wasn't too excited about it entering my awning project. This called for more tools:

That's right. I broke out the wine. After much fretting, I made the cuts. Several of them, in fact, before reinforcements were sent in.

(How long did we really expect the cats to stay away?) Thanks to Sasha for her help!

Here I am cutting the lining to go between the two patterns. I'm all kinds of confident now!

I wanted the bottom of the awning to have a scalloped border, so we used a lid to a coffee can to trace the pattern, and I cut it out. Michelle pinned it all together, then started sewing like it was no big deal. This girl was cool as a cucumber, I'm telling you.

This was our first one, as she turned it right side out. While she sewed, she removed the pins and put them into her little pin tomato. I helped. (Maybe the wine helped?)

I made an alien pin tomato!

Next, while she worked on the second awning, my job was to poke out all the tight corner seams from the inside so that the corners and scallops would be as flat as possible.

Next, we had to add elastic and strips of fabric with velcro. This is how the awnings would attach to the windows.

Michelle used leftover strips of the lining fabric to make the strips we would attach the velcro to. I had purchased the velcro ahead of time, and was thrilled to see it was a "No Mess" process!

With an eye roll, Michelle showed me what the velcro really was...

Oh.

Did I mention I don't sew? Did I also mention I'm very grateful for Michelle? 😀

So, we finished in like 3 days, 22 hours, 47 minutes or something, and WOW! These little darlings were absolutely perfect! Take a look at the finished project, and try not to swoon.

Yellow striped side.

Gray chevron side.

Well, is that not just adorable? I was thrilled with how they turned out and couldn't WAIT to use them! Look for them in future posts, and send Michelle some love and understanding for helping me with these. I learned a lot from the project and will probably be less annoying on the next one. Maybe.

As promised, the instructions for these cuties!

Happy camping and crafting!
